Conference organized by Xavier Sala-i-Martin (Columbia and UPF), and co-sponsored by the European Commission (DG Research), under the program: "Improving Human Research Potential and the Socio-Economic Knowledge Base". Additional financial support was obtained from the Spanish Ministerio de Educación y Cultura and from the Generalitat de Catalunya.
The conference brought together leading experts in the field of economic growth, who presented their current research. The topics covered included proposals to encourage research on poor-country medical problems, a comparison of early waves of innovation at the beginning of the century with the current IT revolution, a comparison of India's economic performance relative to that of East-Asian miracle countries, and evaluation of the role of shifts of labor resources away from agriculture into industry as a factor in post-war European growth rates, as well as a discussion of new empirical approaches to identification of the key determinants of long-run growth.
This call for papers invites you to submit a paper to, or express your interest in attending, the above conference on ‘Euroconference on Innovation, Economic Growth, and European Regional Cohesion’, which will be held in Barcelona on 5/7 June 2000. The conference will be organized by Xavier Sala-i-Martin, sponsored by the Center for Research in International Economics (CREI) and the European Commission (Research Directorate General), and hosted by Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona.
The conference aims to provide a forum for new research in Economic Growth and will stress, among others, the following themes:
Meals and accommodation will be provided for all participants during the conference. Travel expenditures (economy class) will be reimbursed by CREI according to the enclosed guidelines. If you could contribute to the costs of your attendance from a research grant at your disposal this would free up space for someone else. Please indicate on your reply form whether you will be able to cover your own travel costs, or whether you will require funding from the organization.
There will be no publication of the conference proceedings. The present call for papers is being distributed to macroeconomists and industrial economists from all over the world. Please feel free to circulate it beyond that circle to researchers working in the area and, especially, to younger members of the profession.
It would be a great help to us in the organization of this meeting if you could please complete the enclosed reply form indicating whether or not you wish to present a paper (in which case an abstract or summary should be attached), or would be willing to act as discussant, and return this to Ana Ventura (ana.ventura@crei.upf.es) at CREI by January 15, 2000, at the latest. We will confirm your participation in February 2000.
I look forward to hearing from you.
