Controlling Global Capital: Financial Liberalization, Capital Controls and Macroeconomic Performance

October 14-15, 2002

Conference jointly sponsored with CEPR. The organizers were Joachim Voth (UPF and Centre for History and Economics, King's College, Cambridge) and Bary Eichengreen (University of California, Berkeley). Financial support was obtained from the Spanish Minsiterio de Ciencia y Tecnología and from the Generalitat de Catalunya.

The main objective of the conference was to reassess recent and historical experiences with liberalized capital flows. It brought together political scientists, economic historians, applied economists and theorists to analyze the political economy of free capital movement, historical examples of backlashes against globalization and the impact of greater openness on growth and macroeconomic stability.
